Partnering with local community

Employees at our Cassel site have been involved in community work for many years. In February this year, colleagues joined in with ‘Right to Read’, a new project organised by the UK’s Business in the Community initiative. The project aims to encourage the development of children’s’ reading skills while giving them an insight into the chemical industry and the vast array of job opportunities it provides.

Business in the Community hope that our volunteers will become role models for local children and help to raise aspirations in a community where some family members have been unemployed for two or three generations. Parts of Teesside, where Cassel is located, are among some of the most socially deprived in Europe.

The work proved to be valuable to our local primary school as well as being incredibly enjoyable and rewarding for everyone involved from Cassel site.  The six children, with whom the team has worked so far, were rewarded for all their hard work at the end of year celebration assembly last week where they received books, medals and acrylic souvenirs.

One of the Cassel volunteers said:  “The children were a delight to spend time with and the progress in their reading was very apparent.  There were many natural opportunities for me to talk about my role at Cassel, the acrylic products we produce at Lucite International and how they benefit people in every day life.”

Plans are afoot to build on this flourishing link and start to work with the local school children on other projects.

Giving back to the community is extremely important to Lucite International and we participate in many projects ranging from the clearance of important environmental beck areas to providing Christmas presents to disadvantaged children in the area.
