Winner of Environmental Award

Lucite International’s Darwen site in the UK has won the Lancashire Business Environment Award for Waste Minimisation. The award recognises the site’s significant improved performance in the minimisation, management, recovery and recycling of waste.

The Company has been driving waste reduction for many years. The Darwen site has focused on a number of initiatives such as reducing waste to landfill, which has been achieved largely by driving up the amount of recycling. It has also been working on continuous improvement programmes to maximise its first pass quality performance, which has reduced industrial waste.

In the first half of 2012, the site team achieved a total waste (recovery and disposal) reduction of 30% when compared to the same period in 2011. In addition, it achieved a 10% reduction in the total waste sent to landfill when compared to the 2011 volume. The site carries out significant industrial waste recycling and recovery (PMMA liquid, offcuts, swarf etc). Together these projects have contributed over £2m to the bottom line of the Company.

In addition to winning the award for Waste Minimisation, Lucite International also sponsored a Sustainable Business Award for SMEs (Small, Medium Enterprises) and larger companies. This year, Stirk House Hotel won the Award for sustainability projects that included insect and bird conservation and a programme to encourage fair-trade awareness. Crown Paints won the larger company award for its sustainability programme called Earthbalance.
